AGM

Hi all,
I would like to propose the date for the Annual General Meeting for the Club. Given past feedback on Thursdays being no good for some folks, and Friday nights and weekends being sacred, I would like to suggest Wednesday, October 17 (next week) for our meeting. We will have it at Rickey's Flamango Bar at the Cultural Centre where our boats are stored at 7:30 pm. Drinks and food will be on your own dime this time if you want to order anything - Rickey's beer has been clinically proven as the coldest on the island.

On the agenda:
  • Renewed membership dues (October 2007 - October 2008) $360 annually. Please have a cheque or cash and a completed waiver form for the meeting. We will be giving out receipts to avoid any confusion on who has paid their dues and who hasn't, period.
  • New boat has been ordered and will arrive late October - Mike has put the order in for a brand new Hobie Wave and we will be back up to a 4 boat fleet!
  • New sail box or shed? Still trying to get a meeting with DECR to locate a small shed on their site to house our sails, sheets and buoys. As well, need to have someone help build it.
  • Publish a list of sailing dates in advance for racing days.
  • Publish a list of social evenings to put in our calendar. The last evening was a good little event and it was great getting a chance to know our new members.
So, if anyone has other agenda items to add please post them below for all to see and I'll add them for discussion that night. Please make a point of attending or at least replying whether you will be there or not. If you can not make the meeting, please make arrangements with me or Becky to make payment and hand us your completed waiver to keep on file. Please contact me if you need a copy of the waiver and I'll email it to you.

Thanks Everyone! Looking forward to getting the group together next Wednesday evening at Rickey's at 7:30pm.

PAt,

What does it cost to rent one of the locable units from the DECR at the cultural center? I believe there might be at least one available.
This would be better than making another box that ultimately leaves the equipment in a damp and unsecure environment. Also the rented unit would be large enough and secure enough for members to leave their own equipment.
As a non profit organisation we may be able to get a unit for free ??

Pat,

I WILL pay my past dues when I am down next time - honestly, First Caribbean SHOULD have my new check books ready now (after 8 months of first being ordered!).
Unfortunately the wind was flat when I was down last time and I never took Syed out for a spin. He is keen however to learn.

I would like you to table a question about dues at the meeting for persons like myself (at least for the time being) who are essentially absentee/overseas members who obviously can’t make use of the clubs facilities. I know several people who would probably join in this category if there was a lower rate (say 50% of full rate) that included them in all correspondence / social events and also allowed them limited use of the equipment when they are on island. There are many people who are on island only 2–3 months of the year or who visit only two or three times a year for brief periods who would rarely, if ever, use the equipment but would like to feel part of “the sailing club”.

I also think that a lower rate should be considered for students and/or persons under 18. In an attempt to attract more members AND increase revenues.

I think this would bring in quite a bit of additional revenue for the club each year.

I also think that members should be provided with a membership card that expires each year, this will let everyone know who has paid their dues and who hasn’t. (guilty as charged m’lud)

Hi Simon,
Sorry the wind hasn't been cooperative. In 4 years here I haven't seen it so flat for so long.

Good comments, I will table the fee proposals at the meeting and the membership "cards". Good idea.

I had a meeting with Michelle at DECR a few months ago regarding one of the open spots at the CC. She said then that they had all been rented (and rent is $100 to $200 per month depending on location). My proposal was to build a simple 4'x4'x8' high "closet" in one of the open areas for us to stand the sails in and store lifejackets etc. In exchange for free use of this space we would leave behind the closet for the next tenant to use when we re-locate. There was the possibility that we could have sub-letted the space from someone holding it but the $1,200 annual price tag seemed pretty steep.

The alternative would be to have a "hut" built with a roof etc. and beg a bit of space on the CC grounds to locate it. The idea being that when we re-locate (The Bight???) we can take the hut with us. It's still going to take some agreement from DECR. I've tried on several occasions to contact Michelle since but she is a busy lady and travels alot. I'll keep trying.

Thanks for your input Simon and thanks for your support of the club in your absence most of the time.
